Read, Write, Inc. Phonics
Read Write Inc

In Reception the children are taught phonics through the 'Read Write Inc' programme by Ruth Miskin. More information can be found about this at https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/ where you can see video clips of the programme in action, or the RWI pages of the school website.
When children begin Reception they begin to learn 'speed sounds' starting with the sound 'm'. We will be showing you weekly how each sound is pronounced and the picture to help remember and write the sound. We will be learning Set 1 sounds in the following order.

Children use these sounds to blend together to read words containing 2 or more sounds. As the children become more confident they will begin to read a range of green words (words that can be segmented and blended). When they are confident with this skill, they move to reading short phrases or sentences. They will first begin to read 'paper ditties' which they will bring home to continue practise to build fluency.
Children are gradually introduced to 'red' words. These are words that can not be segmented and blended toegther because they contain tricky letters. These are words that we learn to read by looking at their shape and the letters they contain.
Every half term, the children will review the sounds they have learnt and remembered. This information will help us to group the children for the following half term. They will then work in groups of similar stages so we can target any gaps in their sound knowledge.
Ditty books are the next stage to be introduced followed by green books. Staff will feedback to parents each term on the progress the children are making and may ask you to continue to work on specific sounds or words with the children to help them retain more sounds.
