Early Years Foundation Stage Profile

EYFSP: A Parent’s Guide

What is the EYFSP?

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) is a way for teachers to check how children are developing at the end of Reception (around age 5). It helps teachers understand your child’s strengths and where they might need support as they move into Year 1.

Important: This is not a test – children are assessed through everyday play and learning activities.

Areas of Learning

The EYFSP looks at 7 key areas:

  1. Communication & Language – Listening, understanding, and speaking.

  2. Physical Development – Moving, coordinating, and staying healthy.

  3. Personal, Social & Emotional Development – Relationships, feelings, and behavior.

  4. Literacy – Reading and writing skills.

  5. Mathematics – Numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving.

  6. Understanding the World – Knowledge of people, nature, technology, and communities.

  7. Expressive Arts & Design – Creativity, imagination, music, art, and role play.

How Children are Assessed

Teachers observe children throughout the year. Each area is scored as:

  • Emerging – working towards the expected level

  • Expected – meeting the expected level

This helps teachers plan the next steps in learning and identify areas for extra support.

Why EYFSP Matters

  • Helps teachers tailor learning in Year 1.

  • Shows parents how their child is developing.

  • Supports early intervention if a child needs extra help.

  • Provides schools and the government with national data on early learning.

How Parents Can Support Learning

  • Talk and listen to your child every day.

  • Complete the homework set by school - this well help to revise key knowledge and skills - to make the learning stick!
  • Read together – books, signs, labels, anything!

  • Play and explore – puzzles, building, drawing, imaginative games.

  • Encourage curiosity – ask questions and explore answers together.

  • Practice numbers and letters in fun ways – cooking, shopping, games.

Key Points to Remember

  • EYFSP is about progress, not a pass/fail test.

  • Children develop at different speeds – it’s normal for some areas to be emerging.

  • Your child’s teacher will share results and advice at the end of Reception.Understanding the EYFSP_ A Parent's Guide.png
